Jardines Maragesha Natural EF2

About the coffee, the farm and the process

The Story

The Story of Maragesha

Maragesha is a natural hybrid between two renowned coffee varieties: Gesha and Maragogype. Its story began in 2017 at Villa Betulia, the farm of Colombian producer Luis Anibal. At a time when many producers prioritised mass production, Luis Anibal deliberately chose a different path, placing quality above quantity. His commitment to exceptional varieties and experimental processing methods initially resulted in lower yields, but his patience and dedication ultimately led to remarkable discoveries.

The Varieties

Two Renowned Varieties, One Remarkable Coffee

Gesha

Gesha, originally from Ethiopia, is celebrated for its elegant floral aromatics, jasmine notes, tropical fruit character, and delicate acidity.

Maragogype

Maragogype, often called the elephant bean because of its unusually large bean size, is a mutation of Typica known for its smooth profile, subtle sweetness, and gentle acidity.

Maragesha brings together the heritage of these two varieties, offering a fascinating combination of their distinctive qualities.

The Planting

From Villa Betulia to Jardines del Encanto

We were fortunate to obtain seeds directly from Luis Anibal. In 2021, we planted Maragesha at Jardines del Encanto, at an altitude of 2,050 metres above sea level. Since then, it has demonstrated exceptional performance, consistently producing coffees of remarkable complexity, refinement, and cup quality.

Maragesha represents more than a rare coffee variety. It embodies the rewards of patience, experimentation, and the courage to prioritise quality over quantity. From its spontaneous discovery at Villa Betulia to its continued cultivation high in the Colombian mountains, its story reflects a shared pursuit of excellence.

The Altitude

Grown at 2,050 Metres Above Sea Level

Grown at 2,050 metres above sea level at Jardines del Encanto, Colombia, Maragesha is a remarkable expression of exceptional genetics, unique terroir, and an unwavering pursuit of quality.

Colombia is renowned for its smooth, balanced coffees, often characterised by chocolate, nuts, and caramel. Yet at elevations above 2,000 metres, coffee can develop a different dimension of complexity. Cooler temperatures and slower cherry maturation can contribute to greater flavour definition, vibrant acidity, and delicate aromatics, creating the conditions for coffees of extraordinary elegance and character. At Jardines del Encanto, this high-altitude environment provides a remarkable setting for Maragesha to express its full potential.

The Process

Double Fermentation

Aerobic+Anaerobic

At Jardines del Encanto, exceptional genetics meet an extraordinary growing environment, resulting in a coffee that celebrates the possibilities of Colombian specialty coffee at its finest. We combine aerobic and anaerobic fermentation in coffee processing, typically called Double Fermentation or Sequential Fermentation.

Instead of letting them fight it out in the same tank, we layer the two methods back-to-back as distinct steps. By doing this, we can harness the benefits of both environments to create highly complex, multi-dimensional flavour profiles.

Why We Choose It

Why We Choose This Coffee

01

Direct Trade

Our coffee is sourced through direct trade, fostering a close relationship with the producer while promoting transparency and fair value distribution.

02

A Boutique Estate

1 to 5 bags

Jardines del Edén is a boutique experimental estate, not a massive commercial plantation. Many of their most famous experimental lots are produced in batches of just one to five bags total. These micro-lots are often pre-allocated or sold out via direct-trade relationships before the coffee trees have even finished flowering for the season.

03

So Unique

We have chosen this coffee because it's so unique.

From the Farm to Your Cup

We have worked together to execute the most efficient way to make this accessible: a coffee grown in pursuit of an exceptional flavour, roasted by Carlos Escobar at Differente Coffee down the road from the farm, then packed and hand-delivered by Carlos, the co-owner of Jardines himself. I personally re-packed this into 20g lots, and I'm proud to offer these in our online store so everyone can get a taste of something absolutely special.
