How to Remove the E61 Shower Screen

A close-up photograph of the aerator of a chrome-plated faucet with water slowly dripping from it. The water forms large, clear drops and small streams as it falls from the spout.

If you’re using an E61 group head espresso machine, removing and cleaning the shower screen is one of the simplest ways to improve your extractions. Over time, coffee oils, fines, and residue build up behind the screen, affecting water flow and flavor clarity.

The good news? Removing the E61 shower screen is straightforward, requires minimal tools, and helps keep your machine running at its best. Below is a clear, step-by-step guide to removing, cleaning, and reinstalling your E61 shower screen properly.

What You’ll Need Before You Start

Before you begin, gather a few basic tools to make the process smooth and safe:

  • A soft brush or group-head cleaning brush

  • Flathead screwdriver or shower-screen removal tool

  • A microfiber cloth

  • A small bowl to hold screws and small parts

  • Optional: Pesado High Diffusion Espresso Shower Screen if you’re ready to upgrade

Once your tools are ready, you can move on to accessing the shower screen itself.

How to Remove the E61 Shower Screen (Simple Steps)

The image displays a close-up of a modern, professional-looking espresso machine. The machine is predominantly black with chrome and copper accents.

Step 1: Turn Off and Cool Down the Machine

Allow the machine to cool for a few minutes before working on the group head. This prevents burns and avoids removing parts while the metal is expanded from heat.

Step 2: Remove the Portafilter and Wipe the Group Head

Take out your portafilter and wipe the underside of the group head with a dry cloth. This helps remove loose grounds so they don’t fall into the group once the screen comes off.

Step 3: Locate the Shower Screen Screw

In most E61 assemblies, the shower screen is not screwed in place. The central screw only holds the dispersion plate. The shower screen itself simply sits on top of the distribution screw, held in place by a gasket.

Step 4: Gently Pull Out the Screen and Gasket

To remove the shower screen:

  • Wiggle gently using your fingertips, along the edge of the shower screen or

  • Wrap a microfiber cloth around the screen and pull downward with a soft grip.

If the screen won't budge or feels firmly wedged in, it’s usually a sign that the area hasn’t been cleaned in a while or that the gasket has hardened. In this case:

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully lever the edge of the screen and gasket out, taking care not to scratch the group head.

Step 5 (optional): Remove the Dispersion Screw

Once the screen and gasket are removed, it’s a good idea to remove the dispersion screw for cleaning as well. This screw often collects oils, fines, and buildup that can affect water flow. Simply unscrew with a flat head screwdriver and clean with the other parts.

How to Clean the Shower Screen and Gasket

Once you have the shower screen and gasket out, it’s time to remove trapped oils and buildup:

  • Soak both parts in warm water with an espresso cleaner

  • Use a soft brush to remove residue from the holes

  • Rinse thoroughly under running water

  • Check the gasket for brittleness, cracking, or flattening

  • Inspect the screen for warping, clogged holes, or rust spots

A clean, unclogged shower screen improves water dispersion and protects your machine’s internal components. After cleaning, the next question is: when should you replace the screen altogether?

When to Replace Your E61 Shower Screen

The image shows a Pesado shower screen which is described as "Precision coffee tools." The main object is a circular, metallic piece with an intricate, swirling pattern of cutouts.

A standard shower screen can last many months, but certain signs tell you it’s time to upgrade or replace it:

  • The screen looks warped or bent.

  • Persistent clogging even after cleaning

  • Heavy staining or pitting

  • The gasket feels hardened or cracked.

  • You want better water dispersion and easier maintenance.

This is where precision-engineered upgrades like Pesado’s High Diffusion Espresso Shower Screen become valuable. They hold up better over time, resist oil buildup, and provide more even extraction.

Once your parts are ready, reinstalling the screen takes only a few seconds.

How to Reinstall the E61 Shower Screen

Reinstalling is simply the reverse of removal:

  • If you removed the dispersion screw, re-insert it and screw it back in place.

  • Insert the gasket and screen into the group head

  • Gently position the gasket in place with a flathead screwdriver

  • Run a water flush to ensure the screen sits flat

  • Check for leaks or loose movement

A correctly installed shower screen ensures stable water flow and cleaner extractions. With your screen refreshed or upgraded, regular maintenance becomes much easier.

Tips for Easier Maintenance

Small habits make a big difference in espresso machine longevity:

  • Wipe the group head after every shot

  • Clean the shower screen weekly

  • Perform a deep chemical clean monthly

  • Replace the gasket every 6–12 months

  • Avoid overtightening the central screw

These simple steps help keep your E61 group head performing like new.
